Vijay’s final film Jana Nayagan has cleared another major hurdle as the CBFC has completed reviewing the revised version with mandated cuts and mutes. After months of delays and controversies, the film is now targeting a July 23 theatrical release.
CBFC Mandates Multiple Cuts and Mutes
The Central Board of Film Certification has provided a detailed list of cuts and mutes for Jana Nayagan. The team is currently implementing these revisions, which include dialogue muting, character name changes, and modifications to specific scenes. Notably, the CBFC asked the makers to change the character name played by Priyamani as it matched the name of a real-life officer.
The final version will carry an ‘A’ certificate and include the title card “Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu” alongside Vijay’s name. The complete cuts and mutes list will be uploaded to the CBFC website only after the certification process is finalized.
Targeting July 23 for Theatrical Release
If the certification process concludes smoothly, the Jana Nayagan team is aiming for a July 23 theatrical release. This comes after multiple postponements and censor-related delays that pushed the film from its original January 2026 Pongal slot.
The film also faced a major setback when it was illegally leaked and broadcast on a local television channel in April, causing significant business losses.
Massive Box Office Expectations
Despite the controversies and delays, Jana Nayagan is expected to open to massive numbers at the box office. The film’s release gains unprecedented significance as it comes after Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in May 2026, following his party TVK’s historic election victory.
This unique combination of a sitting Chief Minister’s final film appearance is set to draw massive crowds, making Jana Nayagan’s theatrical release one of the most anticipated events in Tamil cinema history.
